Hacks to minimise the stress of getting dressed

We’ve all experienced the stressful morning scramble for clothes that are clean, crease-free and make you feel good. Five outfit changes later and you’re ready to leave the house – albeit you’re running late, with a pile of discarded clothes to pick up when you get home!

Here are some styling tips and wardrobe storage strategies to help minimise the stress of getting ready in the mornings and ensure you leave the house ready to boss your day:

  • It’s All in the Planning: To minimise the morning rush, choose your outfit - including co-ordinating accessories and shoes - the night before. For maximum efficiency you could spend some spare time to photograph a collection of head-to-toe outfits from your wardrobe so you always have inspiration on hand. To achieve pro-level organisation skills, try using an app such as Whering to catalogue your wardrobe and put together outfit mood boards.

  • Know Your Colours: You can avoid having a random assortment of clothes that don’t coordinate well by focusing on a colour palette of 5-6 shades, plus neutrals. Wearing colours that complement your skin tone, eye colour and hair colour will help you instantly look 'well put together’, so look into having a personal stylist carry out a colour analysis for you. Investing in versatile mix-and-match pieces in coordinating colours will simplify decision-making and leave you feeling ‘zen’ in the morning. A capsule wardrobe isn’t for everyone, but it does make life simple!

  • Ditch Co-ordinates: Choose one-piece items like dresses and jumpsuits. They look ultra-stylish without the hassle of having to find co-ordinating separates when you’re short on time. Find the best looks for you by having a personal styling service such as a style refresh consultation or an online body shape styling service. Invest in well-fitting pieces that make you feel confident and use statement accessories to level-up your look from basic to beautiful.

  • Declutter Regularly: Having too many clothes can create decision overwhelm and make it difficult to find your favourite items. Having a regular wardrobe detox will help make things easier. A good rule of thumb is 1-in-1-out, ie look to remove an item from your wardrobe every time you buy something new. Take out anything you haven’t worn for 6-12 months, items that don’t fit and clothes that don’t make you feel good.

  • Get Storage Happy: Group garments in your wardrobe by type and colour for easy access or create zones for complete go-to outfits so they’re always on hand. Try open shelving, drawer dividers and hanging jewellery organisers for easy access at a glance. Storing out-of-season clothes separately removes distractions, so you can reduce time spent rifling through your wardrobe. Space-saving vacuum storage bags and clear under-bed boxes are perfect for keeping clothes stored neatly away.
